Health Today

At SmallerKnickers we want to help to reduce some of the main health concerns affecting us today.

We believe that being aware of our blindspots, habits and beliefs, together with a simple to understand aid on what is happening within our own bodies as we eat, gives us choices as to how to act in the future (recognised through neuroscience research).

By providing visual information on what is happening in our bodies and minds as we eat, could help reduce over-eating and the potential for addiction to certain food types.

While we were researching for SmallerKnickers, here are some of the shocking facts we found:

  • Figures for 2014-15 from the government’s National Child Measurement Programme for England covering all state primary schools, show that while one in four or five children was overweight or obese in Reception, one in three was either overweight or obese in Year 6.
  • Among children aged four and five in Reception year, 9.1% were classified as obese – compared with 9.5% in 2013-14 and 9.9% in 2006-07, when records began.
  • By Year 6, 19.1% of children were obese – an increase on figures from eight years ago.
  • Data are also available from the Health Survey for England (HSE), which includes a smaller sample of children than the NCMP but covers a wider age range. Results from 2014 show that 31.2% of children aged 2 to 15 were classed as either overweight or obese.
  • Data on overweight and obesity among adults (defined as people aged 16 and over) are mainly from the Health Survey for England (HSE). Results for 2014 showed that 61.7% of adults were overweight or obese (65.3% of men and 58.1% of women).
  • There are currently 5 million people in England at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  Around 22,000 people with diabetes die early every year.
  • If current trends persist, one in three people will be obese by 2034 and one in ten will develop Type 2 diabetes.

We aim to help as many people as we can to bring about the healthier lifestyle that they want for themselves and those around them.
